A strong, engaged community

creating a dynamic Future

Our Community,
Our Council

Nestled on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Pormpuraaw is a remote but proud community rich in culture, natural beauty, and strong leadership. Home to the Thaayore, Wik, Bakanh, and Yir Yoront peoples, our town stands between land and sea, where vivid sunsets meet mangrove lined coastlines, and traditional knowledge blends with modern governance.

Connect with our

Community  & Services

The Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council is committed to building a safe, healthy, and thriving community. Under the leadership of Mayor Ralph Kendall Jnr, the Council works hand-in-hand with Elders, residents, and government partners to deliver essential services and community development projects that reflect our values and priorities.

Pormpuraaw may be remote, but our community enjoys a wide range of services that support daily life with two offices, one in Pormpuraaw and one in Cairns. Our health centre, aged care facility, and visiting medical services ensure wellbeing remains a top priority. Families are supported with a day-care centre, primary school, and child safety programs.

Caring for land and sea is core to our identity. Our Land & Sea Rangers manage natural resources, monitor wildlife, and play a vital role in programs like the Wild Crocodile Egg Harvest. The Council also oversees waste and recycling, water services, and campground facilities that reflect our environmental values and our location.

Whether you’re travelling for business or looking to explore a unique part of Australia, Pormpuraaw offers guesthouse accommodation and designated campgrounds. Fishing, birdwatching, and cultural tours provide unforgettable experiences for visitors looking to connect with country and culture.
